I believe it is safe for me to assume that if you're reading this blog you also find entertainment in other forms of media such as movies. Every week my wife and I take time to sit down watch a movie together. This week's movie, if you can't tell by the picture to your left, was "Mom's Night Out".
This isn't a movie review (though I did find it hilarious), but during the movie I had one of those moments when your mind is opened up to something so simple, yet so profound. There is a scene where Bones (Trace Atkins) is talking to Ally (Sarah Drew). Bones is the tattoo artist/biker who helps the ladies in the movie try to locate a missing child. Bones lays a deep and powerful truth on Ally after she opens up to him about her life and how she feels she isn't "good enough".
Ally is a mom who is stressed, emotionally and spiritually drained and just feels like she can't live up to anyone else's expectations. Yet, through the movie we learn the only person she is falling short with, is herself. She says "I'm not enough", but Bones posers her the question, "For who?". Here is part of the scene from the movie.
Bones:"I was raised in church. This might surprise you, but I have since... drifted from the faith"
Ally: "Shocker."
Bones:"My mama worked three jobs. I never met my daddy. I had to get up early and walk to school, but I'd wait up for her coming home from the diner. I'd wait up every night, cause she'd come home and she'd put me to bed and she'd tell me something. She'd tell me the same thing every night. He loves you Charles. No matter who you are, no matter what you do, or how far you run Jesus will always be loving you with his arms opened wide just for being you. I'd smile and go off to sleep.
You know I saw something on Pinterest the other day. It was an eagle, just caring for it's young. Its a beautiful thing to just watch one of God's creation doing what He made it to do. Just being an eagle, and that's enough. Ya'll spend so much time beating yourselves up it must be exhausting. Let me tell you something girl, I doubt the good Lord made a mistake giving your kiddos the mama he did, so you just be you. He'll take care of the rest."
What Trace Atkin's character says here is not only an emotional tug on our hearts to trust in who we are as men or women, but that no matter where we are in life God will always welcome us into his arms with love, mercy and compassion.
For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you. This is what God says in the book of Isaiah. Its powerful for me to be reminded that God will hold my hand, pick me up and take me where He wants me to be. I know I fall short of His glory. Whether I sin, or get stressed with myself or just feel like I'm crumbling from pressure around me, there He is.
Tonight (or whenever you read this) I want you to take one thing away from this. You have a partner in your life who can help you through the toughest things life has for you. No matter where in your life you are, muck, mire or success, God has a love for you that no one can stop or get in the way of.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
